At the start of 2020, the long-awaited phase-out of R22 refrigerant kicked into gear. Also known as freon or HCFC-22, R22 has been found to significantly damage our planet and was banned for production or use in the US via the Clean Air Act.

Why is Freon (R22) Dangerous?
Of all the commonly used refrigerants on the market, R22 was found to be the most detrimental to the ozone layer. Exposure to leaking Freon was also found to cause breathing difficulties, heart problems, and headaches in certain people. Since many of the older models develop Freon leaks, they also require immediate repairs to maintain their safety.
Due to the R22 phase-out managed by the Environmental Protection Agency, R22 will no longer be produced in the US and only recycled containers will be accepted for purchase. As the production of R22 decreases, the price will continue to rise. So although you won’t be required to remove your R22-dependant AC unit right away, it will become more costly to refill.
Do I need to Replace my Freon AC Unit?
First of all, it’s important to determine if your unit even uses freon. If you purchased the unit after 2010, there is a strong chance that it does not. You can check the manufacturer’s data plate on your unit for more details or invite your local ARS / Rescue Rooter team out to take a look at your system. Look for the markers “R22” or “HCFC-22” on the sticker to determine if it uses freon.
Depending on the installation, you will eventually need to have the unit upgraded to use a different refrigerant or have the system replaced altogether. Either way, as soon as the unit requires repair, you will need to choose the best course of action right away.
